Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do I need to have my fire extinguisher inspected and how often?

It is essential that your fire extinguisher is inspected and tested every six months as per the requirements set out in AS1851 2012. This ensures that it is in excellent working order and can effectively control a fire when used correctly. When a fire extinguisher is not maintained or serviced, it may not function effectively, resulting in injury, property damage or even loss of life.

  • How do I use a fire extinguisher?

The P.A.S.S. approach is the best practice for the majority of fire extinguishers:

PULL... Pull the pin. This will also cause the tamper seal to be broken.

AIM... Aim low, with the extinguisher nozzle (or its horn or hose) aimed at the fire's base.

SQUEEZE... To discharge the extinguishing chemical, squeeze the handle.

SWEEP... Sweep around the base of the fire from side to side until it looks to be extinguished. Keep an eye on the surroundings. Repeat steps 2–4 if the fire re-ignites.

NOTE: Do not touch the plastic discharge horn on CO2 extinguishers as it becomes extremely cold and may cause skin injury.

Finally- EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY if you have any doubts about your capacity to battle a fire!
